Student Materials: Please note/bring these IMPORTANT ITEMS FOR YOUR SAFETY: • Wear closed-toe shoes only. • No loose, flowing clothing. • Long hair must be tied back. • No jewelry on hands/arms while turning. • Safety glasses &/or face shields are to be worn while turning. These are available at each turning station, or you may bring your own. • Dust masks are available in the studio -- or if you prefer, bring your own dust shield. • Ear plugs are also available in the studio -- or bring your own hearing protection of choice. Tools: • Each turning station has a PowerMatic 3520C lathe, large/small chucks, and all necessary lathe equipment. Student tool rolls are available for your use. If you prefer, you may bring your own. (Label all personal tools with your name or initials.) Also Recommended to Bring: • Apron, if you don't want to get messy • Turning smock or high neck shirt • Sketchbook or paper and pencil for doodling and notetaking • Hairdryer for drying paint (studio has some to loan) • Miscellaneous paint brushes • Photos of sources of inspiration, such as magazine cut-outs, etc. • Enthusiasm Recommended Reading: • "The Lathe Book," by Ernie Conover (Taunton Press) • "Taunton Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning," by Richard Raffan Estimated Materials Fee Paid to Instructor: $80
School Materials: MATERIALS - Poplar (8/4 dried), - just in case we run out or someone messes up - Yellow wood glue - 8 oz plastic cups for mixing paint - Newspaper for drop-cloths - 1 package of 5 minute epoxy - sandpaper -one can of semi-gloss wipe-on Polyurethane -latex gloves
Instructor Materials: - Paint - Brushes - Wood (8/4 poplar pre-glued for individual projects) - Inspiration, and cheer-leading when needed
Equipment Needs: Woodturning Studio - Forstner bits (7/8" and 1 1/4") - Drill press -bandsaw

Kimberly Winkle is a professor of art at Tennessee Tech University. She earned her MFA in furniture design from San Diego State University and has taught at Penland School of Craft, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Kimberly's work is exhibited widely, including at Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA/Chicago) and the Signature Shop in Atlanta, GA. Her wood creations can be seen in the books 500 Tables, 500 Chairs, and Fine Woodworking Design Book Eight.
