Student Materials: Please bring the following: - a journal for note taking - Thick,Elmers glue Stick, washable, disappearing purple - Bone folder (bone or teflon. I prefer teflon - Awl. also called a pin tool. Can be found in ceramic sections of a craft shop. The main thing is that it does not have a thick tip but rather a thin tapering tip - Mechanical pencil - White Rubber eraser - 4 curved binding needles (1.5",2 or 3" all work fine - Medium sized L-shape Square around 12"x8"made of metal not plastic.These can be found in a hardware store or architectural store on line - Exacto knife and extra blades for it - 2" cheap chip brush found in Lowes paint section - Scissors - Medium sized Self Healing cutting mat about 18" x 24" (found with quilting supplies) Do not get a small one - (Optional) An array of personal memorabilia,photos,decorative paper scraps, small collected ESTIMATED MATERIALS FEES: $45 book supplies $15 copper sheet $10 enamel fee to school ESTIMATED TOTAL MATERIALS FEES: $70

Description
Make a collection of amazingly varied, mixed-media book structures ranging from simple accordion books to the more elaborate Coptic binding. Get creative with decorative papers and different ways to fold pages. Then, learn the basic skills of sifting and firing enamel (powdered glass) onto pieces of copper metal to use as covers or embellishments for your books. Go home with several enamel-adorned books to add to your collection or give as gifts. All levels welcome.

Barbara Joiner has taught clay and jewelry classes for over 40 years. She studied clay at the University of Illinois, silversmithing at Indiana University, and she has an MFA degree from Southern Illinois University. Barbara's work is in many collections, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and has won numerous awards throughout the U.S. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and is the Folk School's Resident Artist in Jewelry & Metals.

Annie Fain Barralon is a native of the crafts and music/dance community of Brasstown and the Folk School's former Music & Dance Coordinator. She teaches a variety of classes at the school including book arts, clawhammer banjo, and several styles of dance: Appalachian clogging, English waltz clog, Northwest Morris, and Bal Folk (learned when she married into a French family). Annie Fain plays banjo and banjo uke for the all-woman string band, Blue Eyed Girl, and has danced with both Loafers Glory Clog Morris and the Green Grass Cloggers. She sells her handmade books, gift cards, and original watercolors regionally and is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
