Student Materials: Please bring: - Old towel to protect your lap - The studio has basketry tool kits, but if you have your own tools and wish to use them, feel free to bring (label with your name or initials). -scissors ESTIMATED MATERIALS FEE: $50-75
School Materials: I have a spreadsheet i can send directly to the studio manager/coordinator . #2 round reed (1 lb) -1 per student and 1 for teacher weaveright tool - 1 per student victor waxed linen - 1-2 to share for the whole class Simple Set thin set 1 gal/ 3.78l - 2 to share for the whole class powdered graphite- 1 to share for class use 8oz black acrylic paint - 1 to share for class use black acrylic spray paint - 1 to share for class use clear coat spray - 1 to share for class use darn annealed wire- 28 gauge 50 ft coil - 1 to share for class use dye stuff - cochnieal, alum, gum arabic disposable gloves measuring tape for demo spray bottles for water -1 for ever two students spray bottles for watered down paint - 1 for demo buckets to hold water 1 for every student or 1 for every two students 9x12 drop cloth plastic - to cover tables and floor while using thin set on baskets wire cutters - 1 for every students needle nose pliers - 1 for every students towel - 1 for every students scissors - 1 for every students hypafix tape medical - 1 for shared class use

Description
Learn methods for building unique, sculptural forms from reed, wire, and waxed linen. Experiment with techniques such as twining, starting various basket bottoms, and twining backward to create curves. Modify the surfaces of your sculptural baskets using thin-set mortar, powdered graphite, spray paints, and watered-down acrylic paints. Bring your curious and experimental self and leave with a foundation of sculptural basketry skills. All levels welcome.

Sarita Westrup is a sculptural basket weaver of mixed Mexican descent based in Dallas, TX. Rooted in weaving techniques and bricolage, her sculptural basketry works are inspired by her upbringing in the Rio Grande Valley on the Texas-Mexico border. Westrup received her MFA in Fibers from the University of North Texas (UNT) in 2016. Her work has been shown at venues such as the Greater Denton Arts Council, Blue Spiral Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina, and was featured in the Nasher Windows series at the Nasher Sculpture Center. She was the first artist in residence at Arts Fort Worth’s Emerging Artist program and was accepted into the American Craft Council Emerging Artists Cohort and received a $10,000 accelerator grant in 2022.
