Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Needle nose pliers (if they are not flying) - Safety glasses - Apron / Dress for mess - Work gloves for working in wire - Students are encouraged to bring found objects, natural vines, recycled materials to filter into their paper mobiles. The main armatures will be built with 16/24 gauge steel wire.

Blend balance, motion, and abstraction as you create expressive, movable, paper mobiles. Utilize overbeaten fibers for handmade paper that will shrink to the form you create and be transparent enough to catch the light. Construct armatures and the point of suspension with wire, found objects, and/or natural materials. Learn to make sheets of paper, work directly with the pulp itself, and apply surface design using natural dyes. No prior papermaking experience required.

Nicole Uzzell was raised in New Jersey and moved to NC to attend UNC-Greensboro and Winston-Salem State University. She received a MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA. Uzzell currently is a professor of Art at Salem College and Forsyth Technical Comm. College while teaching clay handbuilding at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC. Uzzell lives and maintains an active studio practice at the base of Hanging Rock State Park in the foothills of Stokes Co., NC.
