Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Notebook and/or sketchbook -preferred watercolor brushes. -apron -garden shears for harvesting plants -gardening gloves
School Fee & Materials: Fresh materials to harvest from our dye garden, Indigo, madder, Weld.
Instructor Materials: She says: There’s a massive spreadsheet for that. All supplies needed.
Equipment Needs: Stove access (6 burners), -sink access, dye pots (6) strainers/sieves -buckets -digital scale (4) -thermometer -pH strips -gloves -distilled water (4 gallons) -Fresh Dyes from the garden: madder (250g dry/1kg fresh), weld (100g dry/500g fresh), and indigo (about 5kg fresh from roughly 15 square feet). -If available to borrow from Painting: 6 Mullers and 6 slabs

Where does color come from? Delve into the history, chemistry, and hands-on practice of making pigments and paint. Concoct your own palette of handmade watercolors inspired by artists’ recipes from the 14th to the 17th-century, including earth pigments, lake pigments from the dye garden, and charcoal combined with natural medium. Return home with a paint box of twelve watercolors, a sketchbook of recipes and swatches, and the knowledge to continue expanding your palette.

Natalie Stopka is an artist and educator focused on the material history of color and sustainable studio practice. Plant dyes and handmade pigments provide her with a seasonally-evolving vocabulary of texture and color generated from the soil underfoot and the water moving through it. Natalie’s studio and dye garden are in Yonkers, New York. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.
