Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Carving glove &/or thumb guard. These are available for sale in the Folk School Craft Shop, and there are some in the studio. -Carving tools, if you have them (the studio is well stocked) - Dust mask, eye protection, and ear protection -A single flat bladed 2 in carving knife is all that will be needed but bring what you’ve got! -$5 materials fee per blank

School Fee & Materials: Glue, sandpaper, & finish are provided

Instructor Materials: -wood blanks -acrylic paint and brushes

Equipment Needs: -Workbenches & stools -Access to studio's carving tools -- knives, gouges, v-tools, etc. -Carving gloves, for students who don't bring their own

Charles Banks is a Minnesota based carver with a passion for the Nordic arts, and can usually be found by following a trail of wood chips. Charles has spent the past 20 years immersed in sloyd... the tradition of handcraft based education. A current art educator and lifelong learner, he gives his students hands-on experience, including history, influential individuals, and a study of characters and character design, all culminating in the creation of their own hand-carved characters. Charles is a National Norwegian - American Folk Art Show award winner.
