Surface Design for Appliquéd Art Quilts

Create collage-style, appliquéd art quilts with unique fabrics designed entirely by you. Using white fabric and hand-cut silk screen designs, paint and print several pieces of fabric to create a palette of colors and patterns with layered imagery. With a rich assortment of handmade fabrics, begin cutting, layering, and appliquéing to a background; wonderful, illustrative compositions for quilted wall-hangings will emerge. All levels welcome; some sewing experience recommended.

Jude Stuecker is a studio artist with over twenty years of experience making art quilts and a successful line of art clothing. She grew up in Louisville, KY and learned how to sew from a traveling puppeteer when she was nine years old. Later she moved to Asheville, NC to study biology and English at Warren Wilson College, sewing all the while. Extensive traveling inspired her, in addition to several classes at Penland and Arrowmont Schools of Crafts. Focused on surface design, all of her projects start as white fabric before dying, printing, cutting, and sewing. She has taught at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, TN.
