Student Materials: Please bring the following: -3-4 books in need of repair -notebook and pencil -curiosity -(Optional) papers as end sheets and favorite tools labeled with name.
Instructor Materials: Glues, Kozo, repair tissues, starches, leather, binders boards, thread, endbands, muslin hinging, flexible Red Board for Bibles, cleaners, conditioners, preservatives, and handout booklet with Directions, Suppliers, Terms, and Chronology for Different Repairs and Adhesives.

Learn to reattach broken covers, clean and repair pages, remove stains, bring leather back to life, and use cosmetic tricks of the trade and archival products to create miracles. Conservation sew a broken book, sew single sheets to convert a paperback to a traditional hardcover, and more. You can also make a book from “scratch” and are encouraged to bring damaged books from your own library. The instructor will contact students in advance about special interests. All levels welcome.

Dea Sasso is a professional hand bookbinder, sole proprietor of Light of Day Bindery since 1988, and custom leather designer since 1970. She works on private collections; repairs and restores old books; and designs and creates new books, editions, and miniatures. She has been teaching in art institutes and privately since 1991. Dea has an MSPH and has studied and worked for numerous, nationally known hand binders and conservators. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the Guild of Book Workers, and she is the Folk School's Creative Program Advisor for Book & Paper Art, Printmaking, Marbling, and Calligraphy.
