Student Materials: Please bring the following: - For the Coptic book bring a 9 X 12 pad of paper- with at least 100 pages. Choose the type of paper you want for your signatures: text, drawing, mixed media, watercolor, etc. This book will be covered with paste paper. For the paste paper covers bring a few small bottles of inexpensive acrylic paint: one red, blue, yellow, black and white and 3 inexpensive 1 inch brushes. - For the soft cover book. A fat quarter (22"by 18") of fabric, this can be any woven light to medium weight fabric, this will be used to make book cloth. You can use a variety of papers for the signatures in this book so bring a selection, the size should be at least 8 1/5 by 11. - If you have your own book making tools bring them but there are tools for use in the studio.
School Fee & Materials: basic book binding kits
Instructor Materials: waxed linen thread, chemistry and paper for cyanotype, additional papers, book board, curved needles, tools and paper paste for paste paper, rice paper and ink for Suminagashi.

Also, make four different book structures to complement your covers, including a soft cover book with removable signatures, a Japanese stab book, a twin needle Coptic book, and a limp binding. Intermediate levels welcome; some experience with book binding is suggested.

Joyce Tromba has taught science, design technology, and philosophy in the International Baccalaureate Program as well as adult education for over thirty years in five countries. Her love of all things fiber related combines her expertise and education in biology, chemistry, and design. She has a very active practice and small business that includes natural dyeing, book arts, knitting, and sewing. She teaches these topics at Local Cloth, the NC Arboretum, and through the Buncombe County Extension Master Gardener program. She has exhibited at the Asheville Area Arts Council and Local Cloth.
