Traditional Hand Engraving on Copper

Learn the traditional method of hand-engraving on copper to create intaglio prints! Unlike etching, engraving doesn’t require the use of acid and is completely non-toxic. Hand-engraving is a slow and meditative process that lends itself to a wealth of possibilities for detail and beautiful linework and mark-making. Learn to use the burin to engrave your image, how to sharpen tools, and print your plates on a printing press. Return home with a small edition of prints. All levels welcome.

Ashton Ludden lives and works in Knoxville, TN as an artist, educator, volunteer forester, and community builder. She has a BFA in Engraving Arts & Printmaking from Emporia State University and a MFA in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee. Ludden specializes in traditional hand-engraving, printmaking, drawing, and sign painting. Ludden is also the founder, director, and an active artist at Relay Ridge, a collaborative artist space in Knoxville where fellow artists have access to private studios, a gallery, and a community printshop. When she’s not in her studio or tricking others into liking printmaking, you’ll likely find her outside talking about trees, laughing with her partner, or basking with her cat in the sun.
