Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Sketchbook - Drawing utensils (ball point pen + 2B or softer pencil) - Square burin #6 or #8 (E.C. Lyons) - Etching/drypoint needle or scribe (I recommend the cork handle for comfort) - Masking tape - Sharpie (ultra fine + fine point) - Optional but helpful: sandbag 4-8” - Optional but helpful for vision: Optivisor (headpiece for magnifying) - (Optional): extra printing paper (most etching printmaking papers will work, preferred Fabriano Tiepolo)
School Fee & Materials: ● Ink - etching inks Charbonnel (vine, carbon, or bone black are fine) ● Easy wipe ● Tarlatan (starchy cheesecloth) ● Ink knives / glass slabs ● Etching press with 3 felts - pusher, cushion, and sizing catcher ● Scrapers + burnishers (if school does not have already, I can bring) ● 2-3 metal files ● Newsprint (roll or sheets) ● Blotter papers or clean towels (for blotting damp paper) ● Cotton rags ● Matboard cards (from window mat frames) cut to 1-2” squares (for inking plates) ● Lamps/light for each student
Instructor Materials: ● *Paper - Fabriano Tiepolo 22” x 30” (2 per student) ● *Plates - 4” x 6” 18 gauge copper (1 per student) ● Acetate sheet (for registration) ● Sharpening jig + sharpening stones ● Sandpaper + Brasso polish ● Tracing paper ● Faux silk fabric ● (back up inks, examples, extra burins, extra pencils)

Hand-engraving is a slow and meditative process that lends itself to a wealth of possibilities for detail and beautiful linework and mark-making. Learn to use the burin to engrave your image, how to sharpen tools, and print your plates on a printing press. Return home with a small edition of prints. All levels welcome.

Ashton Ludden lives and works in Knoxville, TN as an artist, educator, volunteer forester, and community builder. She has a BFA in Engraving Arts & Printmaking from Emporia State University and a MFA in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee. Ludden specializes in traditional hand-engraving, printmaking, drawing, and sign painting. Ludden is also the founder, director, and an active artist at Relay Ridge, a collaborative artist space in Knoxville where fellow artists have access to private studios, a gallery, and a community printshop. When she’s not in her studio or tricking others into liking printmaking, you’ll likely find her outside talking about trees, laughing with her partner, or basking with her cat in the sun.
