Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Carving glove &/or thumb guard. These are available for sale in the Folk School Craft Shop, and there are some in the studio. -Dust mask, eye protection, and ear protection (Optional) Carving tools, if you have them (the studio is well stocked): -Small hatchet (carving or woodland is fine) - Small bowl adze - Drawknife - Carving gouge - Sloyd knife - Hook knife *Hewing, axe, and adze work can be demanding, so those unaccustomed to such work should bring gloves and ibuprofen (or similar).
School Fee & Materials: Some materials and tools, space/facility to carve.
Instructor Materials: Wood rounds - Spoon blanks - Tools

Learn centuries-old green woodworking skills to transform a fresh log, branch, or hunk of wood into functional spoons and a bowl. Starting with spoons, focus on wood movement, grain pattern and orientation, and proper carving techniques. Move to bowl work midweek, including blank selection, layout, and design. Learn to use your tools safely, and wrap up the week discussing finishing processes for your dried carvings. Moderate hand and upper-body strength are needed.

Michael Cundall, Jr. has been an amateur woodworker for the last ten years, with a particular fondness for green woodworking, primarily bowl and spoon carving. He attended the 2017 Greenwood Fest, where he took classes with JoJo Wood, Barn the Spoon, and Peter Galbert. He has completed two short-term intensives with the esteemed David Fisher. When not working wood, Mike enjoys spending time with his three boys, dancing with his wife, or reading. He is also a philosophy professor who studies humor and the founder of www.mirthmanagement.co, where he helps people understand and use humor. He has a forthcoming book, "The Humor Hack," is due out in early May 2022.
