Student Materials: Please bring the following: NOTE: These items important for your safety. - Wear closed-toe shoes only. - No loose, flowing clothing. - Long hair must be tied back. - We recommend that you leave jewelry at home; no jewelry on hands/arms while turning. - Safety glasses &/or face shields are to be worn while turning. These are available at each turning station, or you may bring your own. - Dust masks are available in the studio -- or if you prefer, bring your own dust shield. - Ear plugs are also available in the studio -- or bring your own hearing protection of choice. TOOLS: Each turning station has a PowerMatic 3520C lathe, large/small chucks, and all necessary lathe equipment. Tool rolls are available and contain 9 tools: roughing gouge, 3/8" & 1/2" spindle/bowl gouges, scraper, parting tool, skew, and bedan. If you prefer, you may bring your own. (Label all personal tools with your name or initials.)
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $50-$60 Shop Supplies Green wood or semi-dry slab blanks Fee will depend on number of blanks used
Instructor Materials: Different hollowing systems and tools along with some dry wood turning blanks for lids, finials, collars and bases.
Equipment Needs: Woodturning Studio Lathes and tool sets for students

Explore different hollowing methods using handheld tools and articulated arm systems with and without laser measuring devices. Also, explore the new video hollowing system. Intermediate turners with good knowledge of basic turning skills welcome.

Steve Cook loves teaching at the Folk School to share his knowledge of bowl turning with students. Steve owns Coastal Wood Design in Savannah, GA, a full-service custom woodshop. He regularly teaches woodturning there and at community events. He sells his woodturnings in galleries in Savannah, online, and he also turns for many builders in his area. Steve has been teaching at the Folk School since 2012.
