Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Apron - Safety goggles - Face mask (optional) - Rubber dishwashing gloves - Digital scale, if you already own one that measures in grams, ounces, and pounds (and can transport it) - Stick blender, if you own one - Wooden or plastic spoon - Rubber spatula - 2 Glass or sturdy plastic measuring cups (Pyrex) -- one 2- to 4-cup, one 4- to 8-cup - Measuring spoons - 2 baby-food jars, or other 2 oz glass or plastic containers for salves - 8-12 empty 1-quart waxed-cardboard containers to use as soap molds. (Paper containers, not plastic -- the kind used for half & half, milk alternatives, soup broth/stock, etc.) - Saran Wrap - Crate, bowl, basket, basket filler, ribbon...items to decorate your gift basket or box. - If you would like to purchase oils, lye, and other soap making and bath product supplies for continuing projects at home, please bring appropriate containers to fill. (Optional) - Any other soap making supplies you may have at home, such as molds, herbs, oils, crinkle cutter, etc - Items with an asterisk can only be used for soap making. They will no longer be safe for food preparation. If you are flying or having a problem finding items, please notify the instructor so that she can bring extras. The school also has many of these items for shared use.
School Fee & Materials: No materials needed provided by the Folk School.
Instructor Materials: - Oils, herbs, colorants, essential oils, fragrances, jars, etc... - Lye - Bottles, jars, and tubes -Recipes, Charts, Handouts
Equipment Needs: Planned for the studio in Keith Lower, with kitchen (max 8). - Tables & chairs for students and instructor - Cooktops for heating oil - Kitchen thermometers - Stick blenders - Scales (digital) - ACCURATE ones that weigh in grams, ounces, and pounds. - Crockpot - 1 or more - Large plastic bowls or pitchers School Materials - Paper towels - Soap drying racks, OR paper grocery bags, OR cardboard trays from soda, bottled water, etc. PROGRAM OPS: Let Housekeeping know in advance about Soap class. Make sure there are enough floor mats for each student -- mats help keep the floors clean. Also, ask for trash pickup midweek. Equipment Needs Necessary equipment. Hot plate per student, measuring glasses, scales, measuring utensils, steel pots, thermometers

Colleen Trickett started making handmade soap in 1999, sparked by environmental and animal advocacy activism, an urge to create beautiful and practical gifts, and a desire to use and promote eco-conscious and cruelty-free products without the harsh chemicals found in commercial body products. With a desire to make original formulations, she studied cosmetic chemistry, herbology, and FDA requirements. Colleen is the author of Soap Revolution, sharing a wealth of knowledge and easy DIY recipes. She creates and teaches natural soap and body products under the Green Girl Basics LLC in her retail space and working studio in Roswell Georgia.
