Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Box to make hardware for (or order from instructor before class begins / $75-$200) - Water bottle - Closed-toe, leather work shoes - Cotton clothing; long pants/no cuff - Safety glasses* - Ear protection* - Particulate respirator or N95 mask* (optional) - Leather apron & gloves (optional) - Personal tools, if desired * The school has generic ear plugs and safety glasses available to borrow. However, you are encouraged to bring your own high-quality, well-fitting ear and eye protection. The Blacksmith Shop also sells safety glasses and N95 masks if needed.

Come explore the process for creating hinges, handles, latches, and other box and chest hardware. Pat McCarty has been blacksmithing for twenty years, has served as assistant instructor at the Folk School since 2004, and since 2008, has co-taught a popular class combining blacksmithing and woodworking to make a traditional chest with hardware. His work is featured in "Treasure Chests" by Lon Schleining. Pat has learned a lot from other smiths, including Uri Hofi, and he loves to pass his knowledge on through teaching. He is a member of Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America (ABANA), the Blacksmith Association of Missouri, and is a juried member of the Best of Missouri Hands.
