Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Cotton clothing; long pants/no cuff - Hardsole shoes with closed toe - Leather Apron - Gloves - Eye protection* - Hearing protection* -8" half round metal file (optional) * The school has generic ear plugs and safety glasses available. However, you are encouraged to bring your own high-quality, well-fitting ear and eye protection. The Folk School Craft Shop also sells safety glasses. NOTE: The cost of silver fluctuates. Total materials fee will be depend on silver prices at the time of the class.

Begin by forging a piece of Damascus steel–a particularly beautiful and ornamental steel filled with folds and distinctive patterns–then shape that steel into a ring blank to be lined with silver. Robert Burns started learning to forge under the direction of Jymm Hoffman at the age of thirteen. He took courses from Jymm in the American style of ornamental ironwork until the age of seventeen. Robert then began to teach himself knifemaking/blade smithing and opened his business, Wilderness Ironworks. at the age of eighteen. He pursued his business full-time for the next ten years, specializing in forging damascus, historic reproductions, and custom art knives/axes. Robert has had his work featured in "Blade Magazine," "Knives," "Knives Illustrated," "Knives-The Best in Handmade Knives," "Sur le Tableau," and at the Metals Museum.
