Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Wear cotton/natural fiber clothing and closed toe shoes -Work apron -Particle dust mask to wear while sifting enamels -Covered water bottle, no food or open drinks in the studio -The folk school has all the tools needed, but students are responsible for replacement cost of broken or lost tools. You may bring your own tools labeled with your name. -rubber tip pens "clay shapers" extra firm set, (www.dickblick.com) -Speedball fine point dry pen holder, (www.dickblick.com), preferred nib and pen set -variety of fine point nibs, (www.dickblick.com) -Princeton 1/2" Snap! Stroke brush, (www.dickblick.com) -Stencils (www.cooltools.us). Folkschool has many stencils too.

Description

Gain an introduction to various techniques for creating patterns on enamel surfaces. Create handmade stencils, layer store-bought stencils, try mark-making using sgraffito, and develop repeating patterns with enamel ink and a quill pen. Experiment with the properties of Thompson medium expansion enamels as well as a variety of overglaze brands and firing temperatures. Make test tiles and have the opportunity to make a finished pendant with a mosaic pattern of your choice. All levels welcome.

Tanya Crane is a multi-disciplinary artist working mainly within the context of jewlry and sculpture for the body. She is an Assistant professor in 3d Foundations+Jewelry+Sculpture at Long Beach City College. craft has become a bridge between her artistic practice and her dedication to serving communities through education and active involvement. Crane was the 2024 winner of a United States Artist fellowship. She was a 2023 Artist in Residence at Hewnoaks in Lovell, Maine, and a 2022 Artist in Residence at Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland, Maine. In 2018, crane exhibited her work in a solo exhibition at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee.
