Description

Blacksmiths have an elegantly simple solution for every problem–hit it with a hammer! And, every time we hit it, the metal moves in three dimensions. Learn to think of hot steel as a mass-like clay to squish instead of as a line to bend. Learn to track changes in order to make controllable and repeatable forgings of your own design. Expect to focus on skill building rather than finished pieces. All levels welcome.

Chris Winterstein trained as a blacksmith at the Penland School of Craft and at the Folk School, beginning in the mid-1990s. He spent two and a half years on staff at the National Ornamental Metal Museum and several years as coordinator of the iron studio at Penland before moving to work for Samuel Yellin Metalsmiths in Philadelphia, PA. He has also worked with Scott Lankton and John Medwedeff. Chris's primary interests in forging are working aggressively with mass and developing ornamental forgings that move in three dimensions. He currently lives and works in El Paso, TX.
