Student Materials: Please bring the following: NOTE: These items important for your safety - Wear closed-toe shoes only - No loose, flowing clothing - Long hair must be tied back - We recommend that you leave jewelry at home; no jewelry on hands/arms while turning - Safety glasses &/or face shields are to be worn while turning. These are available at each turning station, or you may bring your own. - Dust masks are available in the studio -- or if you prefer, bring your own dust shield. - Ear plugs are also available in the studio -- or bring your own hearing protection of choice. TOOLS: Each turning station has a PowerMatic 3520C lathe, large/small chucks, and all necessary lathe equipment. Tool rolls are available and contain 9 tools: roughing gouge, 3/8" & 1/2" spindle/bowl gouges, scraper, parting tool, skew, and bedan. If you prefer, you may bring your own. (Label all personal tools with your name or initials.)
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEES: $20 Shop Supplies and Poplar wood blanks
Instructor Materials: Instructor will bring wood for class. Fee $50-100 depending on amount used by students
Equipment Needs: Lathes, Students tool sets and standard shop equipment.

Advance your skills using repeated or tilted mounts as you explore multi-axis turning and embellishing. Striking profiles add dimension and intrigue to spindle projects such as candlesticks. Create geometric flower designs on disks for pendants or hangings. Go further to create three-dimensional shapes, such as pumpkins or stars, as you learn to make simple jigs for these unique projects rather than having to buy additional equipment. All levels welcome. $

Raised and now living in Kentucky, Robert Henrickson worked for forty years as a professional archaeologist in the Near East, primarily in Turkey, with his research focused on pottery dating from 5500-150 BC. He has been turning for 15 years, creating a range of multiaxis, sculptural, and complex spindle work, in addition to various types of vessels influenced by his archaeological experience and knowledge of classical forms. Traditional turning in other cultures provides further inspirations. In addition to taking classes in other media at the Folk School, Robert became an Assistant Instructor in turning classes in 2016 and Instructor in 2021. In the past 10 years he has frequently demonstrated for regional turning clubs.
