Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Work/art clothes & shoes that can get wet and messy - A notebook and pen for taking notes OPTIONAL: You may bring materials to be marbled, but please communicate with the instructor prior to class to determine suitability. We will NOT be marbling 3-D or synthetic items.

School Fee & Materials: Paper towels cloth towels for floor paper or plastic to cover tables

Instructor Materials: carrageenan size alum as mordant acrylic paints distilled water paper of several types and sizes silk scarves cotton squares leather tanks of varying sizes rakes & combs all other supplies for marbling materials & supplies for end-of-week projects

Equipment Needs: -Trays, vats, access to porch/outside space, rakes and combs. Blenders, and make new Marbling Kits available for use with instructions about preventing contamination with soaps or other than acrylic paints. -Paper towels, cloth towels, clothes pins, plastic covering for tables white boards for transferring wet papers etc. to the front porch for rinsing, hanging and drying.

Experience the magic of paper marbling with acrylic paint. Marbling involves floating pigments on water and creating designs with a variety of techniques. Learn how to create traditional and contemporary patterns on paper, fabric, and leather. End the week with colorful pieces to frame, use in book arts or basketry, and even wear!

PLEASE NOTE: This class is for 12-17 year olds to attend with a parent, grandparent, or guardian–1 youth per 1 adult. To register, you MUST purchase adult and youth spots as a pair, one youth per one adult: $670 (adult), $330 (youth), $1,000 (combined).

Anne Murray first encountered The Penland Book of Handmade Books at the public library in 2006, and since then has been passionate about making books. She has continued learning and practicing the crafts involved in making books – binding, making paper, marbling, creating book cloth, and woodworking. These skills have been acquired from the John Campbell Folk School (Brasstown, NC), the Penland School of Crafts (Penland, NC), the Sawtooth School for Visual Art (Winston-Salem, NC), as well as from several well-known paper/book artists. After years of developing and expanding her skills, she is now a full-time artist specializing in bookbinding, papermaking, and marbling. Anne is at heart a teacher, finding pleasure in sharing her passion for paper and book arts.
