Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Water bottle - Closed-toe, leather work shoes - Cotton clothing; long pants/no cuff - Safety glasses* - Ear protection* - Particulate respirator or N95 mask* (optional) - Leather apron & gloves (optional) - Personal tools, if desired * The school has generic ear plugs and safety glasses available to borrow. However, you are encouraged to bring your own high-quality, well-fitting ear and eye protection. The Blacksmith Shop also sells safety glasses and N95 masks if needed.
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $55-$88 Standard Coal Fee: $22-$44 Standard Steel Fee: $35-$44+ 1/2" square and 3/8" square hot-rolled steel, 3' long For tong making, 8 pieces of 5/8 square 8" long Other projects will use materials as designed by the students, with temperance.

Take your first steps towards the forge! First, learn how to maintain a coal fire and practice points discipline for hammering. Then, achieve good, clean hammer control and progress to tool making. Forge, harden, and temper your own punches, chisels, and tongs while learning about steel. Watch your skills develop as you use tools you have made to create keychains, nails, bottle openers, and hooks. All levels welcome; be prepared for an active class. $

Mark J. Hopper is a full-time designer blacksmith in Atlanta. He began his education in blacksmithing in 1990 in Britain and has continued to further his knowledge and experience whilst working and teaching in Europe, Africa, and America. Whether teaching or making work for clients, Mark is always focused upon the process and function as he celebrates the great craftsmen of the past. He has a teaching shop in Douglasville, GA, Goat n Hammer, which has been running classes since 2013.
