Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Water bottle - Closed-toe, leather work shoes - Cotton clothing; long pants/no cuff - Safety glasses* - Ear protection* - Particulate respirator or N95 mask* (optional) - Leather apron & gloves (optional) - Personal tools, if desired * The school has generic ear plugs and safety glasses available to borrow. However, you are encouraged to bring your own high-quality, well-fitting ear and eye protection. The Blacksmith Shop also sells safety glasses and N95 masks if needed. 2-Week Class. Following the tradition of Francis Whitaker, you will have the opportunity to focus on fine ornamental iron work for a personal, predesigned project. In addition to working on individual projects, share and learn from the techniques used in your fellow classmate’s work. Students must be able to perform a dropped-tongs forge weld, make upset square corners, and freehand scrolls. Predesigned projects must be submitted to your instructor before class begins. $

This class continues through August 22nd.

Following

In addition to working on individual projects, share and learn from the techniques used in your fellow classmate’s work. Please note: There are no classes during the weekend between sessions. Although housing is available, students are responsible for their own meals from Saturday supper through Sunday lunch.

Tal Harris began blacksmithing in 1980, and since that time has been a student of forged ironwork and traditional joinery methods. Tal demonstrates at various blacksmithing events, domestic and abroad. Tal’s focus includes teaching traditional joinery methods, basic tools and processes, precise layout, and forging components to dimension.
