Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Merino combed top (NOT Superwash) appropriate for felting, in a variety of colors you like. Bring 1 pound total -- 2 pounds if you wish to work larger. (The instructors will have a limited supply of extra materials and supplies for optional purchase.) - Apron or grubby clothes for dyeing - Comfortable shoes that can get wet - Rubber or vinyl gloves for dyeing - Large plastic bag for wet stuff - Water-spreading tool, such as a spray bottle, cup, squeeze bottle, or ball brauser - Soap: olive-oil soap or Ivory dish liquid - 4-8 ties: 8-10" pieces of cut-up pantyhose legs - Scissors for fabric - Tape measure - 8-10 Small containers w/lids - brushes, stamps, stencils if desired - Half dozen small, lidded jars or yogurt cups with SEALABLE lids - Watercolor-type brushes -- one large flat and one large round. Chinese brushes work well, too. (Optional): - Note-taking supplies and Camera - Box of fine straight pins with heads (quilting pins) or fine T-pins - WHITE mixing palette/egg or ice cube tray - Embellishment materials for felting: small quantities of yarns, pre-felt shapes, Angelina fibers, scraps of silk fabrics, etc. - Bring samples of YOUR work, especially if you imagine adding nuno-felt/silk-painting to your "toolbox" Liz (felting): [email protected] Neal (silk dyeing/painting): [email protected]
School Fee & Materials: Paper towels - white, please One 6' table per student, on Risers Two 6' tables per instructor Wet Room: washer-n-dryer spin dryer clean irons and ironing boards clotheslines and pins
Instructor Materials: Liz will bring felting kits ($10 kit per student) and 6 yards of silk fabric per student ($30); and samples for process & inspiration. - Neal will bring: dyes & other supplies ($45 kit), underlayment to cover tables, Synthrapol, and vinegar and samples for process and inspiration. - Each will bring: extra materials/supplies for optional purchase. - Liz will also bring water bath canner for steaming. - Pre-class email letter/questionnaire w/ invitation to contact Instructors w/questions

Bring an exciting focus to your quilt, garment, book, or interior décor. All levels are welcome; this class requires some muscle and periods of standing.

Neal Howard has been a professional weaver and dyer of silk yarns since 1989, working with woven shibori and other surface design techniques for the past ten years. Color theory study, educational presentations, and dyeing and weaving demonstrations all fuel her passion for the fiber arts. Neal is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Piedmont Craftsmen, and Carolina Designer Craftsmen. She enjoys bringing a sense of adventure and humor to the classroom.

Liz Spear has been working with her hands since 1978 and is now a full-time craftsperson in western North Carolina. She is primarily a weaver of cloth and a maker of fine garments, many with nuno-felt or rag fabric. Teaching and demonstrating for North Carolina's craft schools and craft organizations is an important part of her continuing to master her craft. Liz is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Referred to as the "Queen of Communication," she enjoys collecting, sending, and displaying postcards.
