Student Materials: Please bring the following: NOTE: These items important for your safety -Wear closed-toe shoes only -No loose, flowing clothing -Long hair must be tied back -We recommend that you leave jewelry at home; no jewelry on hands/arms while turning -Safety glasses &/or face shields are to be worn while turning. These are available at each turning station, or you may bring your own. -Dust masks are available in the studio -- or if you prefer, bring your own dust shield. -Ear plugs are also available in the studio -- or bring your own hearing protection of choice. TOOLS: * Each turning station has a PowerMatic 3520C lathe, large/small chucks, and all necessary lathe equipment. Tool rolls are available and contain 9 tools: roughing gouge, 3/8" & 1/2" spindle/bowl gouges, scraper, parting tool, skew, and bedan. If you prefer, you may bring your own. (Label all personal tools with your name or initials.)
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $10 Glue, sandpaper, & finish are provided.

Explore the basics of woodturning, get familiar with shop safety, and gain experience on the lathe. Build confidence turning beads and coves–the foundation of all woodturning. Discover how to make a tenon and advance to turning a mallet, honey dipper, toothpick holder, small box, bowl, and plate. This class introduces cutting tools and their proper use, as well as how to keep them sharp. This will be a valuable introduction to the possibilities of the lathe; geared toward novice woodturners.

Scarlette Rouse lives and farms in Seven Springs, NC and has been woodturning since 2007. She loves teaching beginning woodturning and helping students feel comfortable at the lathe. Scarlette has taught and been an assistant instructor for several years. She has demonstrated for clubs as well as the North Carolina Woodturning Symposium.
