Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Wear cotton clothing only, and closed-toe shoes - no sandals -Apron, Notebook, lint-free rag, small block or pad to set work on ( 2-4” square) -Pack of Dap blue Stik-Tak Blue Sticky Tack -Personal family photos, drawings/sketches, black and white high contrast designs -Your favorite color Inspiration photos or books -Graphite Drawing pencils; 4B- 6H Graphite Pencils -Prismacolor pencil~ white White Prismacolor -Tracing paper; Canson Tracing paper; -Crowquil Pen tips; Hunt 107 or 104 Crow quill Pen -Xacto knife + extra blades no. 11; Exacto -Palette Knife; Palette Knife -High-quality brushes;1, 0, 2/0, 3/0 (Finer 5/0, & 6/0 are optional;) Windsor Newton Series 7 Natural Sable (Sable are the best, but you can get by with synthetic) -Plastic stencils or other materials such as lace, laser cut cards, netting -Small Scissors (suggestion; Joyce Chen Scissors; -Rubber stamps you may have on hand; optional -6 x6” cheap ceramic tile or glass with beveled edges -Air-tight container to hold 6 x 6” tile -Any copper sheet or shapes you already own; Studio has a supply of all for sale -Some enamels may contain small amounts of hazardous materials. It is recommended to use a particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent). The mask can be purchased from Rio Grande, item #201-654 (1-800-545-6566 or www.riogrande.com). You may also find them at your local hardware store. The Folk School has all the tools needed, but students are responsible for replacement cost of any broken or lost tools. Any classes requiring etchants or fuels, such as MAPP gas or acetylene, will be charged a fee for the amount used.
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $30-$50 Oils for china painting-(lavendar, clove, anise, balsam of copaiba)with small plastic funnels for mixing oils. Preferably all sets; 108,109,110,111 Liquid Etch-all, diamond pads, alundum stones, glass brushes, 91% isopropyl alcohol, distilled water, penny bright and/or bar keepers friend, green scrub pads. A variety of opaque and transparent enamels- (particularly1030 white, 1996 black, 2020 clear), 1 oz liquid brushable enamel in white, clear, and black from Thompson Enamel. Instructor Materials: Primary and secondary color set of China Paints for class use Die-formed copper blanks in various shapes, make-up sponges, rubbers stamps, Stencil materials, red seral transfer paper. A metallic luster kit for class to use. Plastic cups to make screens. Stainless mesh in 80,100.150. 200 Gold and silver foil squares for sale outside of class fee. Pre enameled steel squares of white board and black board
Equipment Needs: All standard enameling kilns, firing forks, trivets, firing racks, etc. Eye protection, STACK Sifters, diamond pads, alundum stones, etc. pumice, penny bright, green scrubby pads, etc. for cleanup

Barbara McFadyen has been designing jewelry in precious metals, stones, and vitreous enamel for over three decades. Her passion is to create heirloom worthy objects of adornment or artist books that combine her explorations and love of enamel and metal techniques. She is nationally recognized through exhibitions with the American Crafts Council, the Smithsonian Institution, SNAG, and the Enamelist Society where she has won several awards. Her work is in the permanent collections of The Enamel Arts Foundation and the Mint Museum and is currently exhibited at galleries such as the Penland Gallery, Piedmont Craftsmen, and Creative Metalsmiths. She received her MFA from East Carolina University, and her BA in Creative Arts from Eckerd College. She maintains her studio practice in Chapel Hill, NC, where she lives with her husband and beloved dog.
