Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Dust mask, eye protection, and ear protection -Long pants and closed-toe shoes to be worn in the shop -wood burning tools to embellish paddles (optional)
School Fee & Materials: - 4-8 ounce bottles polyurethane glue - sandpaper (80 through 220 grit) - 1 quart minwax helmsman satin finish polyurethane, - 1 1/2“ paintbrushes - wood glue for rounding marker construction - 30-1” foam brushes for glue and epoxy - 20 pencils
Instructor Materials: -Wood, -paddle blanks, -beeswax/oil finish, -epoxy, epoxy stir sticks, epoxy cups -small scale for epoxy mixing.
Equipment Needs: -Workbenches & stools -Access to studio's tools -microwave for epoxy

Create laminated, wooden, straight shaft canoe paddles using cedar and hardwoods. Learn paddle design, construction, and finishing and work with a variety of power and hand tools to create your paddles. Take home two finished paddles; one paddle blank glued up by the instructor that you shape and finish and one paddle you create from scratch. Woodworking experience is helpful, but not required. All levels welcome. $

Fred Gasper and his wife canoe and kayak lakes and rivers in northern Michigan where they live. He’s constructed wooden kayaks, cedar strip canoes, a glued lapstrake sailboat, a drift boat, and the paddles and oars to go with them over the last 25 years. His current focus is on building traditional canoe paddle shapes that are truly meant to be used. He has worked hard to make properly sized, lightweight, and well balanced paddles with comfortable handles and shafts.
