Hands-on Handles (Long Weekend)

One of the best ways to get comfortable making handles is to make a lot of pots and then make a lot of handles! This immersive class let’s you do just that. Make mugs, bowls, pitchers, and teapots, and consider elements such as comfort of use, volume, proportion, and functionality as you make your handles. Gain a new level of proficiency and develop your critical eye. Intermediate levels welcome, must be able to center 1.5 lbs of clay and trim independently. Process only; no firings.

In a parallel universe Mathew Meunier is a third-generation carpenter. A chance encounter with a handmade pot in a friend’s cupboard led him instead to the pottery studio and a new way of working with his hands. Coming from a family of skilled craftsmen and craftswomen, Mathew’s work is rooted in function. After an immersive apprenticeship to Mark Shapiro in western Massachusetts, and an invaluable artist-in-residence spell at the Kansas City Clay Guild, he established his own studio in rural Comer, GA, where he continues working with a living material in a time-honored craft to meet people’s daily needs.
