Description

Explore the techniques and history of a 9,000-year-old form of finger-weaving while creating a twined bag based on Native Southeastern designs. Twining is a form of weaving in which you use your fingers to twist weft strands of fiber around pairs of hanging warps. Also, learn how to make simple weave changes to create additional patterns for your future twined projects. No experience required, but some manual dexterity is needed for this relaxing and therapeutic activity.

Monica Newman Moore twined her first bag in 1995 sitting in a Creek Indian living history camp of the 1770s era. Since that time, she has researched twining techniques through archeological remains and surviving textiles in order to rediscover this beautiful and durable method of finger-weaving. She is now one of the leading practitioners of this nearly vanished art and has been commissioned to make reproductions for historical museums. Moore published a how-to book for twining in 2008. She lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and is a member of the West Alabama Fiber Guild.
