Student Materials: Please bring the following: -White cotton muslin 8 yds or old all cotton sheets. Wash fabric several times before class. -Water resistant Micron pen. (Can be bought Walmart, Joanns, Staples -Thin medical exam gloves -one pair of thicker dishwashing gloves -Dusk mask -2 wooden dowels 1 1/4 to 1 1/2“ diameter by 15” length. (Lowe’s/ home depo will cut to size) -Two old small kitchen towel sized rags -2 Empty plastic gallon jug with lids, from water or vinegar (we will fill them with water to aid in making tight fabric bundles )

Instructor Materials: Mordants -natural dye extracts -cellulose fabric

Equipment Needs: Three Turkey steamers -towels -washing machine -large spoons -7 six foot tables -another table any Dimension -plastic buckets -plastic sheeting to cover tables

Description

Experiment with eco-printing as a contact printing technique. Place leaves over mordanted cloth and roll them tightly in a bundle, then boil or steam the bundle to transfer the tannins and some pigment from within the leaves/flowers. Scour and mordant your fabrics and forage on the Folk School grounds for interesting botanicals. Review your results and adjust steam time and design layout. Cellulose will be used, but full instructions will be given for protein fibers.

Scour and mordant your fabrics and forage on the Folk School grounds for interesting botanicals. Review your results and adjust steam time and design layout. Also, print over indigo-dyed, cotton fabric. Cellulose will be used, but full instructions will be given for protein fibers.

Denise Arcuri has been a passionate garment sewer throughout her life since childhood. When she retired from a profession in the medical field she took it one step further by also dyeing and printing the cloth she uses. With that knowledge she has been eco-printing; trying different combinations of mordants and botanicals since 2017. Her art provides her peace, joy, and balance. She has taught classes at Local Cloth, a non-profit organization down in the River Arts District in Asheville NC.
