Sessions: 6
Session Hours: 6.00
Program Area: Metalwork
Instructor: Trish Nicholas & Gay Reilly
Studio/Location: Jewelry Studio
Student Materials: Please bring the following: - As many decorative tin cans &/or cookie tins as you can get and transport! (There is no specific number, as it will vary depending on projects. You can often find them at thrift stores.) * Look for cans with the design incorporated into the metal, not as a paper label. The larger, the better. * Corrugated cans and soda cans are not as useful. * Use a magnet to determine they are tin, the basis of our constructions. Aluminum cans can be used for decorative purposes. Also bring: - Creative ideas for what you might make. This could be ANYTHING -- from jewelry and decorative art to lunch boxes and purses, picture frames and lamps, whirlygigs and garden art -- just imagine! - Pad of plain paper for making patterns - Pencil - Ruler - Fine-point, black Sharpie marker - Scissors - Safety glasses. (If you wear glasses, try 3M Eyeglass Protectors, #47030, that fit comfortably over glasses -- available at building-supply stores.) - Found objects of all sizes, mementos, old jewelry, kitchen tools, and "funky items" to incorporate into your project. - Jewelry/wire snips and needle-nose pliers, if you have these. (Label personal tools with your name or initials.) Tool kits will be supplied by the instructor for your use, and there will be some basic tools for sale at the end of class. Tools used less frequently will be supplied by the instructor. If you've taken this class before and know what is needed, feel free to bring additional tools that are helpful.

PLEASE NOTE: This class is for 12-17 year olds to attend with a parent, grandparent, or guardian -- 1 youth per 1 adult. To register, you MUST purchase adult and youth spots as a pair, one youth per one adult: $670 (adult), $330 (youth), $1,000 (combined).

Trish Nicholas took her first metal class in 2003 in blacksmithing. A few tinsmithing classes later, she learned the art of a tin can from Bobby Hansen. While developing her skills, she also assisted, then co-taught Tin Can Art with Charlie Orlando. Trish has been a solo instructor since 2014.

Gay Reilly began her exploration working with metals over 10 years ago with a welding class taken at the Folk School. Blacksmithing, coppersmithing, and tinsmithing became natural pursuits for expanding the creative process. Using traditional techniques combined with educating others has been a great pairing for Gay as an artist and educator.
