Be sure to clearly mark your tools to encourage their safe return. The studio will provide any tools you don't have for you to use in making your chair. We will discuss finding and purchasing desirable tools in the class. - Drawknife - Spokeshave - Scorp/Inshave - Marking gauge - Reamer - Try Square - Bit Brace and Auger Bits (3/8, 1/2, 11/16 and 5/8 bits) - Handsaw - Bench Chisel (1”)

Description

The “democratic chair” was specifically designed by Curtis Buchanan to be made with just a few hand tools, allowing more people access to the craft. Build this handsome, Windsor-style, chair as you practice basic chairmaking techniques, use a small kit of hand tools to split parts from a log, shape legs and spindles, drill mortises, and carve the seat. This project is intended to build skills and confidence in using affordable hand tools to produce refined furniture with a handcrafted look. $

Tyler Rogers is a chair maker who lives in Chattanooga, TN, with his wife and young son. He started in the carpentry world nearly 10 years ago renovating houses. His fascination with craftspeople making everyday objects (bowls, chairs) led him to spend time in his shop building Windsor chairs. In his spare time, he enjoys fly-fishing, cycling, and reading.
