Student Materials: Please bring the following: - A variety of scraps, leftover fabrics you have on hand, or you can pick from instructor's stash. - Quilt batting (low-loft or craft fleece) and fabric for the backing. You may purchase these ahead of time, or plan a shopping trip during class when you have a better understanding of what you want to make. - Basic sewing supplies: scissors (for paper and for cloth), machine-sewing thread**, pins, seam ripper, etc. - Acrylic ruler, 6"-8" x 12"-24". - Rotary cutter with sharp blade & a small to medium cutting mat for your workstation -- if you can pack & transport it so that it remains flat. (The school has large ones for shared use, along with a Martelli cutting table.) - Personal sewing machine in good working order, plus bobbins, extra needles, feet, other attachments, and owner's manual (if you have it). The school has machines*, but you would be more comfortable using your own, if you can transport. * The Folk School has JUKI QVP2000s, Pfaff Tiptronic 2040s, one Pfaff Expression 3000, one Baby Lock Quilters Choice, one Singer Simple 3116, and one simple White machine. ** If you plan to use a school machine, please bring good-quality thread (choose from: Auriful, Mettler, Robison-Anton, YLI, or Isacord), as they produce less lint to clog up the bobbin assembly. Coats & Clark or Gutermann threads cannot be used on our machines. If you need special colors, there are quilt shops in nearby towns of Murphy, Hayesville, and Blairsville.

School Fee & Materials: - A stack of old newspapers, about 6" thick.

Laurel Horton has been making quilts and researching historic quilts since 1975. She has authored or edited numerous books and articles, and she has taught at the Folk School since 1990. She enjoys teaching simple quilting techniques that allow students to enjoy the experience, express themselves, and produce terrific results. In 2025 Laurel was inducted into the Quilter's Hall of Fame for her years of work as a quilt scholar who has made significant contributions that have shaped the world of quilting in research, publications, museums, and preservation.
