Flute, Pennywhistle & Recorder

Enjoy this intro to Irish traditional music for flute, pennywhistle, and recorder, including repertoire, technique, and ear-training. Footage viewings, history, discussion, and one-on-one time with your instructor included. Designed for beginner to intermediate players with some prior experience with your instrument and the ability to play a few tunes by ear. Beginners interested in joining are encouraged to contact the instructor. Class will be taught by ear.

Matthew Olwell is a performing and teaching artist whose work blends traditional music, foot percussion, and visual media. He is a founding member of the band Maivish, and former member of Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble. He has appeared at numerous festivals and camps, including the UVA Flute Forum, the Dublin Dance Festival, the Augusta Heritage Center, and the Aulnay All Blues Festival in Paris. For many years, Matthew co-Directed Good Foot Dance Company with Emily Oleson. He completed an MFA in dance at Temple University in 2020, and currently resides in Virginia where he is an journeyman “fluthier” at Olwell Flutes, studying wooden flute-making and repair with his brother Aaron and father Patrick Olwell, who is a 2026 NEA Heritage Fellow. Matthew’s self-produced 2016 recording project CyberTrad blends traditional and original Irish and Breton music with bass and Beatbox. The Irish Echo called it, “Outstanding... Olwell is an artist with a keen vision.”
