Jim Carey has loved nature his whole life. Jim’s earliest memories include going outside to identify trees and animals, as well as learning nature crafts. As a teen, he spent countless hours exploring woodlands, growing vegetables and herbs for his family, and camping with his Scout Troop friends. As an adult, Jim has gone on many more hikes and campouts. He loves sharing his nature knowledge with others. For example, for over 20 years he has volunteered to help young people learn outdoor skills in a nearby Scout Troop. Jim also created and led nature walks for his adult co-workers as part of an employee health promotion program. During the height of the COVID pandemic, Jim authored nearly 30 short Internet essays that anyone could use to practice fun and interesting “backyard bushcraft”activities at home. In addition to his nature interests, Jim is an enthusiastic woodcarver. He has attended Campbell Folk School classes since January 2004, and more recently has been a wood carving instructor. In 2024, the Folk School interviewed Jim about his teaching methods (see JCCFS | Try Fan Bird Carving with Jim Carey ).

Megan Carey has always had a fascination and love for nature and the outdoors. She spent her childhood climbing trees, searching for crawdads in mountain streams on family hikes, cooking meals over a fire on family campouts, and helping in her dad’s vegetable garden each summer. Now as an adult, Megan still loves hiking and camping, but also goes rock climbing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. She runs her own garden business helping folks maintain native pollinator gardens and volunteers at various bird banding stations on her off days. She travels the world looking to spot new species of birds or other wildlife and spends as much time outdoors as possible. Megan is thrilled to share her passion for nature in the Appalachians during the upcoming "Outdoor Skills & Nature Fun" class.
