Al and Alice White met at the Grand Ole Opry – and the rest is history!

Al taught Appalachian music for string instruments at Berea College for 20 years and led two energetic student groups, “The Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble” and “Mariachi Berea”. He is best known for his mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and banjo playing.

Alice plays mandolin and upright bass and sings. Together, as members of “The McLain Family Band”, Al and Alice have performed across the US and abroad, from the Grand Old Opry and the Kennedy Center, to school gyms north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska, and in Hobart, Tasmania.

Both now retired from teaching, they continue to tour with the bluegrass band, “The McLain Family Band”, and perform with Alice’s sister, Ruth McLain Smith, as the trio, “Al, Alice, and Ruth”. Al and Alice can also be heard playing for American contra and square dances in the Berea Cast-offs band. Al occasionally joins George Paul's band, “Playing with Fyre”.
