Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Set of basic clay-working tools (available at pottery supply companies or the Folk School Craft Shop). Please label personal tools with your name or initials. Tools should include: - Serrated Metal Rib for scouring - Plastic Stiff Rib (multiple sizes and types if you have them) - Wooden Sculpting tools - Wooden Rib - Needle Tool - Wire Cut Off Tool - Small sponge - Small and medium Paintbrushes (for applying water and smoothing hard-to-each areas) - Fettling Knife - Sureform or Mudtools Rasp - 2-3 work towels - Plastic or wooden bats to move around sculptures - Work apron, if desired, or clothes you can get dirty - Packing material to transport your pieces home - Container to carry home scrap clay - Water bottle Estimated number of bags of clay per student: 1-2 ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FEE: $36-72 (Clay at $36 per bag, which includes glaze & firing)

School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $36-$72 - Banding wheel for each student - Plastic for covering work - Underglazes and Iron Oxide wash (I can mix it up during workshop) for students to glaze small sculptures

Instructor Materials: - Personal Banding wheel - Personal tools - Oxide washes and underglazes to demonstrate glazing at end of workshop.

Equipment Needs: - Work table for demonstration and students - Banding wheels for students

Expand your ability to sculpt! Focus on creating animal sculptures using techniques for hollowing solid forms as well as coil and slab building. Begin with creating a small, moquette sculpture, then build larger scale animals up to 18 inches tall. Learn how to give your animals expressive details with an emphasis on posture, facial features, and carving texture. Expect to end the workshop with at least two completed, unfired sculptures and guidance about glazing and firing afterwards.

Katie Maloney is a studio artist based next to her family’s farm in Southeast Virginia. Her early years of wandering through the woods fostered a deep admiration for the natural world and continues to inspire her animal ceramics. Katie received her BA in
ceramics at Guilford College and participated in artist-in-residence programs including STARworks Ceramics. She has taught workshops at various art centers and exhibited work nationally at galleries and fine art shows including the Smithsonian Craft Show.
