Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Set of basic clay-working tools (available at pottery supply companies or the Folk School Craft Shop). Please label personal tools with your name or initials. - 2-3 work towels - Work apron, if desired, or clothes you can get dirty - Dust mask for sanding - Packing material to transport your pieces home -Container to carry home scrap clay - Water bottle -Sponge -Paint Tray Palette -Variety of sandpaper -Spray Sealer: (Recommendations below) • Duncan Spray Sealers- Art fixative- Satin, Matte, or Gloss • Krylon Matte Finish or UV- Resistant Clear (gloss) • Clear Varnish Spray • Acrylic Spray Sealer -Any or all of these materials to experiment with: Acrylics, gouache, watercolors, colored pencils, Amaco Rub N’ Buff metallic wax, Pigment Powders, Wood-stains, Pastels, Encaustic wax paint, Spray paint, Make-up, India Inks, Paint brushes, steel brush -(Optional) fired, unglazed work Estimated number of bags of clay expected to be used per student: 1 (Clay at $30 per bag for bisque firing only classes)

Description

Explore nontraditional finishes and learn new surface techniques on fired clay that create depth through layering materials such as watercolor, gouache, stains, waxes, and more! Walk away with finished sculptures and new skills for decorating ceramic forms without ceramic glazes or a kiln. Students are encouraged to bring fired and unglazed work and will also be given time to hand-build at least one piece in class. Previous experience with clay is recommended, but not required.

Nina Kawar is a sculptor and designer whose creative practice explores the human condition, healing, and consciousness. She aims to push the boundaries of porcelain through carving and delicate forms, while her copper electroform jewelry is layered with metaphysics, science, and design. Many of her influences stem from psychology, biology, and spirituality.
