Identifying & Journaling Trees

Enjoy the complementary pleasures of art and nature. Spend your mornings learning to identify and appreciate native trees on the Folk School campus. In the afternoons, return to the studio to create artful journals about the trees, their identifying characteristics, and observations of their ecosystems using ink pen and watercolor. The ability to walk on uneven terrain is important. Students will benefit from prior drawing experience.

Sue Dolamore is a talented artist known for her exceptional watercolor techniques and bold ink linework. Inspired by the natural beauty of Western North Carolina, she captures the region’s landscapes with vibrant color and striking detail. An avid sketcher, Sue carries her journal on outings and travels, while also exploring both abstract and representational work in the studio. With a B.A. in education, she is dedicated to helping students develop their artistic skills and build confidence. In 2019, Sue opened her studio at Warehouse Studios in Asheville, NC, where her luminous watercolors continue to captivate and inspire.

Mr. Jeff Menzer,” aka “Stick Man,” comes from a family of foresters, arborists and gardeners. Being able to recognize and know a tree is like finding an old friend at a class reunion. Bonus points if you can remember their name. He is a lifelong naturalist with degrees in Environmental science and drawing. As a field instructor and staff trainer at the North Carolina Outward Bound School he began “Earth Craft”, a way to develop a personal environmental ethic. In addition to his time in the garden he is a prolific sculptor, working with industrial discards and natural materials. “Mr. Jeff” believes that art can be fun. He and his wife, Annie, live in Asheville, NC. Together. They operate “The Natural Gardeners LLC,” Where Art and Gardening Merge."
