Student Materials: Please bring the following: -extra wool/cotton/silk which we may get a chance to dye in the vat . (A few extra items to dye to use extra leftover indigo vat from the prior week.) -stencils if you have them (Optional): -bring additional fabric but please note that the fresh indigo only works on silk or wool. -additional cotton to do the other direct application techniques (Hapa-zome and stencil). -apron and rubber gloves
School Fee & Materials: 5 good sized indigo plants per person -3 blenders -ice -Kosher salt, 1 box Access to the Cory Brown Dye Garden. Needs fresh indigo to pick for use in class. (3 plants per student still in the garden, to pick.)
Instructor Materials: 2 silk scarves -another small piece of silk as well as some cotton for the Hapa-zome (leaf pounding) and stencil technique
Equipment Needs: Wet room setup, dye pots sinks and etc

Use Folk School grown indigo which will be at its peak, perfect for exploring these three techniques. Use silk and wool for the ice and salt indigo dyeing which work best on protein fibers and use cotton for the Hapa Zome method. Fresh indigo gives a lovely turquoise color–dyeing your fingernails optional! All levels welcome.

Fresh indigo gives a lovely turquoise color–dyeing your fingernails optional! In addition to fresh indigo leaves, also experiment with direct application techniques using different mordants on cotton with other leaves in the dye garden and surrounding area. All levels welcome.

Joyce Tromba has taught science, design technology, and philosophy in the International Baccalaureate Program as well as adult education for over thirty years in five countries. Her love of all things fiber related combines her expertise and education in biology, chemistry, and design. She has a very active practice and small business that includes natural dyeing, book arts, knitting, and sewing. She teaches these topics at Local Cloth, the NC Arboretum, and through the Buncombe County Extension Master Gardener program. She has exhibited at the Asheville Area Arts Council and Local Cloth.
