Student Materials: Please bring the following: - 1 or 2 terrycloth old hand towels - a magnifying device, such as an OptiVISOR or reading glasses, may be helpful for detail work. - safety glasses. (If you wear glasses, try 3M Eyeglass Protectors, #47030, that fit comfortably over glasses -- available at building-supply stores.) Safety glasses are also available in the studio, if needed. - it is recommended to use a particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent) when using a polisher and grinder in the Jewelry studio. The mask can be purchased from Rio Grande, item #201-654 (1-800-545-6566 or www.riogrande.com). You may also find them at your local hardware store. - black, fine-point Sharpie pen - notebook and pen - something to tie your hair back with, if applicable - apron or old clothes, recommended - non-flammable clothing and close-toed shoes, recommended - (Optional) Bring chasing tool and chasing hammers if you have already. Do not go out and buy new. It is better to use what the instructor has and learn the difference between a good tool and a poor tool.
School Fee & Materials: fuel/propane paper towels
Instructor Materials: Copper, wax for chasing ,chasing tools and chasing hammers. Also a raising bench with raising ball stakes to do the chasing.
Equipment Needs: Jewelry Studio - Torches, student tool kits, soldering supplies, saws, and other basic metalworking equipment. - Large screen TV monitor with internet access for projecting demonstrations

Description

Learn the basics for raising a vessel from a flat sheet of copper–both orb (ball-shaped) and flat bottom shapes. Chase images into the surface of the vessels using small punches and texturing stamps to add decoration and flair. Use a variety of hammers and stakes to gain a deeper understanding of the tools used for raising and chasing. All levels welcome. $

Bob Taylor began blacksmithing in 1985. Ten years later, his changed his focus to coppersmithing. He has demonstrated techniques at the Alabama Forge Council Conference and at local chapter meetings. He has also served as editor of "Bituminous Bits" and forgemaster of the local forge. Bob has taught throughout the Southeast and his work is held in private collections across the U.S. and abroad.

Anne Jordan has been working in copper for over 14 years, creating realistic representations of plants and animals in their natural environments. She grew up in Fairfax, VA, graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in geography, and later went into a career in mapping. She lives in Chantilly, VA with her husband and two adorable dogs.
