Student Materials: Please bring the following: Brushes -(2) size 6 short handle liner (not round) - the Princeton Heritage 4050 is a great choice -(2) size 2 short handle liner - the Princeton Heritage 4050 or Isabey 6222 size 2 are great choices Oil paints -Venetian -Indigo -Yellow Ochre -Mars Yellow -Titanium White -Raw Sienna -Raw Umber -Mars Black -Bring the paints that you have, but if you are purchasing a color, Windsor and Newton artists oils are referred, not Winton Other supplies -Backgrounded panel at least 12x12"in a bayberry color. These can be cardboard/cereal boxes, masonite, or plywood, like birch. Please paint and lightly sand before class. -Soapstone pencil (can be purchased at a plumbers supply store) -Sealed jar to be used for turpentine 1-2 cup size (must be kept covered) -lid or tiny jar to be used for linseed oil -palette knife -palette of choice -lard oil or vaseline -2 good sealing containers like a yogurt, cottage cheese, or sour cream container. They don’t have to be large - pint size is great -brush holder or a small cup of rice -notebook to write in

Instructor Materials: • Milk paint • chip brushes • boxes - We are going to paint these amazing hand-made boxes made by Mike Lusk. They are about 12”x12”x4” and will be about $30 each + shipping for the batch. We will need to order them ahead of time. We can talk about this. • I will need a 2 quarts of linseed oil and 2 quarts of turpentine waiting for me (or maybe I can purchase them once there). This should be about $40. I can’t fly with solvents. These will be used by the entire class. • photographs of old pieces to paint from. Each student will have a set to work from and keep.

Tonya Mandy grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota and attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where she earned by bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1999. She moved to the Twin Cities where she worked in infrared heating and later received her master’s degree in Intercultural Leadership. After returning to Rapid City, she began rosemaling in 2014 and began painting under Judith Kjenstad in 2018, which has been one of her greatest privileges. It goes without saying that her painting in the old ways is her biggest influence. She received her Vesterheim Gold Medal for Rosemaling in 2024.
