Songs of Western North Carolina (Long Weekend)

Western North Carolina is home to many amazing singers whose legacies have created a folk song cannon that is unique to this region. Enjoy this “campfire” song class where we delve into the music of North Carolina luminaries such as Ola Belle Reed, Doc Watson, Sheila Kay Adams, and Frank Proffit. Enjoy some mountain carols and holiday hymns for the season. Develop your passion and confidence for singing and Appalachian music in a nurturing environment where you will receive a fun musical immersion along with vocal tips and technique as well as opportunities to break-out into small groups.

Susan Pepper teaches ballad workshops at regional and national venues including Youth Traditional Song Weekend, Southeastern Regional Folk Alliance, the Greater Washington Folk and Dance Society, and the Virtual Banjo and Fiddle Frolic. She has performed ballads at the Library of Congress and is included in the Traditional Artists Directory of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. Pepper has worked extensively with the Junior Appalachian Musicians Program in western North Carolina and has vast experience teaching folk songs, guitar, and mountain dulcimer to children of all ages. Pepper has released three albums, The Prettiest Bird (2020), Hollerin' Girl (2015) and her field recordings On the Threshold of a Dream (2009). She is also the co-producer of the Appalachian music film, "The Mountain Minor." Susan learned directly from elder singers and musicians in western North Carolina while pursuing her master's degree in Appalachian Studies.
