Student Materials: Please bring the following: -1 or 2 terrycloth old hand towels -A magnifying device, such as an OptiVISOR or reading glasses, may be helpful for detail work. OptiVISORs are also available in the studio, if needed. -Safety glasses. (If you wear glasses, try 3M Eyeglass Protectors, #47030, that fit comfortably over glasses -- available at building-supply stores.) Safety glasses are also available in the studio, if needed. -It is recommended to use a particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent) when using a polisher and grinder in the Jewelry studio. The mask can be purchased from Rio Grande, item #201-654 (1-800-545-6566 or www.riogrande.com). You may also find them at your local hardware store. -Ear plugs are available in the craft shop for a small fee should you need them. -Black, fine-point Sharpie pen -Notebook and pen -Something to tie your hair back with, if applicable -Apron or old clothes, recommended -Non-flammable clothing and close-toed shoes, recommended NOTE: The fluctuating cost of metals used in this class may result in changes to the estimated materials fees at the time the class is run.

Description

Time travel to the early 20th-century and learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing as you recreate your own craftsman-era household goods. Using a coppersmithing book from 1908, be guided through several projects including napkin rings, teaspoons, and drawer pulls alongside other possible projects using your newfound skills. Both decorative and functional, using these objects will bring to life the traditions of craftsman metalsmithing in your everyday routines. All levels welcome. $

Ashley Gilreath graduated from the Metal Design program at East Carolina University and has been an Artist-In-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts(TN), Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, and the Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft(NC). She has exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design, Fuller Craft Museum, The Metals Museum, and has been published by Lark Books and American Craft Magazine. She teaches workshops in both metalsmithing and enameling at craft schools around the country. Ashley's artwork and jewelry explore the hidden narratives of everyday objects, and our relationships with heirlooms as artifacts of genealogical history.
