Student Materials: Please bring the following: - 3 yards of 100% white cotton pfd fabric - 2 lb paraffin wax -Clean iron to prep fabric - Scissors - Rubber gloves - Apron - Notebook and pen

Instructor Materials: Batik tools Dye Handout for each student
Equipment Needs: clean clothes pins -Wax burners -1 and 5 gallon buckets -wax boil out pot and -propane and burner -paint stir sticks ( long strong for dipping) -12" stick for each wax burner for draining hot stamp -iron cleaner -heavy paper to cover floors and tables -big window fans to keep students cool (3-4)

Learn Nigerian Yoruba batik–adire alabela–which means wax resist. Apply wax to fabric using wood stamps, stencils, or foam rubber/free hand. This class is for those who would like to experiment with more color and how to use multiple colors within their batik. Indigo, the color of love, will be applied at the end of the process. Also, learn the personal history, culture, and meaning behind the designs used. All levels welcome.

Gasali Adeyemo, a Nigerian batik artist, learned his craft at the Nike Center for Arts & Culture in Osogbo. After studying there and teaching for several years, his artwork was exhibited in Germany. As a result, his artistic career began to bloom. He now teaches and exhibits in the U.S. and internationally and resides in Santa Fe, NM.
