Wallet Weekend

Make a two-pocket card wallet out of vegetable-tanned leather using a traditional two-needle saddle stitch. Learn to cut, glue, and finish leather with burnishing resulting in a wallet that will last a lifetime. In addition to the classic saddle stitch, take a look at different wallet designs and discuss other forming and molding techniques. Travis Stuart grew up in Bethel, a rural farming community in Haywood County, NC. Mostly known as an Appalachian musician and storyteller, Travis has taught and performed music of the region all over the U.S. and several foreign countries. He was instrumental in bringing the Junior Appalachian Musician program to western North Carolina and teaches in music programs throughout WNC and at the Appalachian music department at Warren Wilson College. Travis took up leatherworking to cope with grief after the loss of his twin brother and musical partner fiddler Trevor Stuart. He enjoys making wallets and custom items such as knife sheaths, musical instruments straps, and journal covers. Travis lives in Canton, NC with his wife, two kids, two dogs, and a cat.
