In addition to literary magazines such as Ascent, Passages North, Water~Stone Review, Witness, and Hunger Mountain, Charisse Coleman’s essays have appeared in The Raleigh News & Observer, The Independent Weekly, and as a chapter in the criminal justice textbook Wounds That Do Not Bind: Victim-Based Perspectives on the Death Penalty. A two-time recipient of NC State Arts Council Fellowships for nonfiction, her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and twice listed as Notable in the Best American Essays series. Formerly a professional actor, Charisse has worked successfully as a gypsy house painter, office temp, babysitter, dog walker, and legal proofreader, and very badly as a legal secretary and cocktail waitress (unfortunately, not at the same time, which would have improved things immeasurably). She lives Durham, NC with her husband, two cats and a rat terrier.
