Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Closed-toe, leather work shoes - Cotton clothing; long pants/no cuff - Safety glasses* - Ear protection* - Leather apron & gloves (optional) - Water bottle - Personal tools, if desired * The school has generic ear plugs and safety glasses available. However, you are encouraged to bring your own high-quality, well-fitting ear and eye protection. The Folk School Craft Shop also sells high-quality safety glasses. Standard Coal Fee: $20-$40 Standard Steel Fee: $35-$40+ Total Estimated Fee: $55-80+
School Fee & Materials: - Bags of coal for students to purchase for use in class - Steel stock – please specify types and sizes needed: 3/8" and 1/2" round and square bar stock. - Please list any other material needs here: N/A

Discover how to build and manage a coal fire and how to use that heat to create several useful and decorative items, all while practicing seven of the basic blacksmithing processes. Choose from a variety of projects or bring your own ideas. All levels welcome.

Ron Nichols started blacksmithing in the early 1990s. He focuses on traditional joinery work and 14th-century chasing and repoussé. He is a member of numerous blacksmith organizations and is President of the Rutherford County Blacksmith Association (NC) where he teaches weekly "green coal" classes. Ron's passion is teaching beginning blacksmithing and passing on the craft. He has led classes, workshops, or demonstrations at John C. Campbell Folk School (Murphy NC), New York State Designer Blacksmiths (Corning NY), Artist Blacksmith Association of North America (various conferences), Prairie Blacksmith Association (Nebraska), a Snap-On Tools Convention at Gaylord Opryland (Nashville TN), his personal forge in Brentwood, TN, and numerous other forges across Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.
