Schedule Type Title: Every Day of the Week
Schedule Description: Daily
Sessions: 6
Session Hours: 6.00
Program Area: Quilting, Surface Design
Instructor: Tone Haugen-Cogburn
Studio/Location: Quilting Studio
Student Materials: The transfer paint technique lends itself very nicely to botanical shapes, like leaves, straws, ferns, etc. When you see some that you like, place them inside a newspaper and press under something heavy for a few days. Keep these in a folder and bring to the workshop. 100 sheets of cheap copy paper Roll of paper towels Rubber, latex, or nitrile gloves Painter's mask Old shirt/apron 8 small (~1c) containers with lids to take paint home Paint brushes and foam brushes, about 1" wide Paper and fabric scissors Old iron without steam holes if you have it Sewing machine in good working order (also available in the studio) 3 yd of POLYESTER or POLY/COTTON blend (at least 50% poly) fabric, white or light-colored (WASHED & IRONED). The more polyester that is in the fabric, the better color you will get when you transfer paint. You can bring other synthetic fabrics you have to experiment on. Most fabrics that can take high heat can be used, but fabrics with nylon in them will melt.
School Fee & Materials: MATERIALS - Plastic for table coverings & tape - Additional paper towels (students are each asked to bring a roll)
Instructor Materials: Transfer paint kit for each student - Texture materials/collection of dried plant materials - Embroidery floss - Weaver's Cloth at $10/yard - Personal sewing machine - A few older irons - Instructional handouts
Equipment Needs: Quilting Studio - A few irons & ironing boards -- preferably older irons without steam holes. (Instructor is also bringing a few, and students are asked to bring an old iron, if they have it.) - Tables & chairs. (TONE: Please cover tables with plastic while doing the painting portion of the class.) - Cutting tables and extra mats - Sewing machines, for students who do not bring their own
Skill Level: All Levels
Total Materials Fees: $30

Description

Transfer paints rely on heat to bond with synthetic fibers. Layer these paints to achieve a watercolor wash effect, apply them in more defined shapes, or use them with resists such as botanical shapes. Learn how to mix paints and play with color combinations on sample pieces. Incorporate your transfer-painted fabrics into a nontraditional wall quilt or table runner, embellished with hand or machine quilting. All levels welcome; basic sewing skills required.
