Student Materials: Please bring the following: - imagery/artwork of their own making to translate into block prints using 8x10" blocks. To transfer imagery, students have the option to draw and carve directly onto their blocks, transfer via graphite paper, or convert digitally via laser-printer/image transfer workflow that will be explained during the workshop.
School Fee & Materials: The Folk School will provide printer paper (for image transfers) and cleaning materials for workspaces, brayers, and equipment.
Instructor Materials: Instructor will provide: cotton-rag and rice paper for printing, linoleum and wood blocks, and a new Speedball carving tool for each student. Black printmaking ink, hand-printing barens, newsprint, graphite transfer paper, as well as brushes, acrylic medium for image transfers, and inks/paints for embellishment. Students will keep their prints, carved block matrices, and cutting tools upon completion of the workshop.
Equipment Needs: Laser printer or photocopier (for image transfers), relief printing press, ink brayers, glass inking tables/plates, water tub for soaking paper, ink knives, ink scraper, paper tear bar, bench hooks for block carving, print drying racks, as well as work tables/desks, chairs, and personal storage for students. I'm not sure what the printing area is already stocked with, so some of these may be redundant. I can also bring some of these if they're not available, just let me know!

This workshop is for first-time printmakers, experienced printers looking to expand or refresh their knowledge in relief print and any 2D artists looking to translate their work into hand-made block prints, including tattooers (think hand-made duplicates of your flash sheets!). Cover image, block, and paper preparation, carving tools and techniques, press and hand-printing methods (you can do at home!), and creating editions and unique proofs with your prints.

Nick Osetek is an illustrator, printmaker, and tattooer currently working in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2016 from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina with a concentration in studio art and advanced printmaking. The 2 years following his degree, he taught woodshop foundations to incoming fine-art students at Appalachian State, then completed a 6-month, sustainable printmaking internship at Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, Massachusetts. Osetek has exhibited work regionally and nationally since 2011, as well as internationally for printmaking exhibitions in Cuba, Amsterdam, and Hunan, China. He's been a recipient for the Judy Humphrey Travel Award for Printmaking, the Suzanne Hill Scholarship Fund, and most recently was selected for the 2024 Artist Support Grant provided by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County.
