Old-time Stringband Ensemble

Learn favorite Southern fiddle and stringband tunes at slow and faster tempos. All stringed instrumentalists are welcome to join our all-star band. Have fun playing tunes from West Virginia, North Carolina, Mississippi, and everywhere in-between. Jam all week long while learning tips on old-time style, rhythm, and chord back-up. Repertoire will be taught quickly by ear. Intermediate students and above welcome; come join our group of merry music makers!

Carl Jones and his wife Erynn Marshall are old-time musicians and inspired tunesmiths from Hillsville, VA. They are married-in life and music. While rooted in the traditional sounds of older players, this duo stays true to their own muse by composing new, tradition-rooted music. Their original tunes and songs are played by many musicians around the world and Carl's song, "Last Time on the Road," was featured on the Grammy-award winning album "Unleashed" by the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Instrumentally, Marshall and Jones have won many awards for their playing including Erynn's 1st place fiddle wins at Clifftop and Mt. Airy and Carl's 3rd place fingerpicking-guitar win at Winfield. In 2020, they released a duet recording, "Old Tin," and are featured on "Old-Time Sweethearts" (2021) and "Fiddle-Tunes by Uncle Dick Hutchison" (2022).
