Student Materials: Please bring the following: Instructor provides everything to make a doll. Items to personalize your own doll (optional), such as: -Specific fabrics you want to use - bring a 12x12” square fabric -Jewelry you want to repurpose -Sticks, feathers, acorns, moss, or props for your doll. Many students went gathering outside to find natural outdoor materials -Beads -Some students in the past have made brooms, Cornhusk fish, tomahawk, firewood bundles for a few ideas. Please call or email instructor for details or explanations. Think of a few ideas and feel free to share your ideas before class and we can try to make it work. ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FEE: $40
School Fee & Materials: Basic fabric scraps are available Access to the Folk School’s quilting library. The studio has all the required equipment available for your use, including a sewing toolkit and machines. If you would like to bring your own supplies, please bring and label with your name: - Basic sewing and quilting supplies: fabric scissors, seam ripper, straight pins, safety pins, etc. - Rotary cutter with sharp blade and a cutting mat for your workstation, if you can pack & transport it so that it remains flat. (The school has mats for shared use, along with a Martelli cutting table.) - Water- or heat-soluble fabric marker or tailor’s chalk - Acrylic ruler, 6”-8” x 12”-24” or what instructor designates. - Personal sewing machine in good working order, plus bobbins, extra needles, feet, attachments, and owner’s manual (if you have it). The school has machines*, but you would be much more comfortable using your own, if you can transport it.
Instructor Materials: Cornhusk Doll materials used: - Cornhusk - Raffia natural color - Black wool acrylic yarn - Wool cloth - Calico fabrics or solid fabrics - Glue guns and glue sticks - Small tubs to soak Cornhusks. - Scissors - Needles and thread - 2-3 colors of yarn - Size 11 glass seed beads - Small colored ribbons - Leather scraps and artificial sinew - Materials will be provided to make miniature earrings - Rubber bands for doll hair - Doll stand

Laura Walkingstick is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on the Qualla Boundary in Cherokee, North Carolina. She comes from a family of artisans on both sides of her parents. She received her AFA in 2005 in Studio Arts with a concentration in metalsmithing, and a BFA in 2014 in Studio Arts with a concentration in ceramics at the Institute of American Indian Arts College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She graduated with her MA in Art Therapy & Counseling 2018 at the Southwestern College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has three of her pieces in permanent museum collections.
